About Michael Theall, PhD

Michael Theall (Ph.D., Syracuse University), Associate Professor of Education at Youngstown State University, has been a full-time faculty member and/or directed teaching and learning centers at four universities. He has taught courses in undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs, first-year courses in a reading and study skills program, and an introductory course in an entirely on-line bachelor’s degree program in liberal studies. 

Dr Theall has edited, published or presented over 250 books, monographs, papers, presentations, workshops, or webinars on college teaching, faculty evaluation and development, teaching improvement, and organizational development. His primary research is on the professoriate, faculty evaluation, professional development, and student ratings of teaching. His most recent work has focused in faculty roles, work, and skills and how better definition and consideration of these factors can lead to improved evaluation and professional development and thus, to the enhancement teaching and learning and the college teaching profession. He has been chair of the American Educational Research Association’s Special Interest Group in Faculty Teaching, Evaluation, & Development (AERA-SIGFTED), Executive Board Member and Treasurer of the Southern Regional Faculty and Instructional Development Consortium (SRFIDC), and is the 2009 President of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD).   

In 2002, he was awarded the AERA-SIGFTED W.J. McKeachie Career Achievement Award. In 2003, he received the St. Anselm Alumni Association Academic Achievement Award.  In 2005, he received the Relating Research to Practice, Integrative Scholarship Award from AERA. His students successfully nominated him for inclusion in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in 2004, 2005, & 2007. He received the Robert J. Menges Research Presentation Award from POD for his 2008 discussion of research on the professoriate, and he was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi honor society in 2009.

Administration: Twenty nine years in academic support positions at four higher education institutions; twenty-one years directing teaching-learning support and evaluation-assessment units.

Funded Projects: $65,000.00 Massachusetts grant to reformat print curriculum into computer-assisted instruction to train MA Department of Employment Security staff in use of computerized job search & placement system. $250,000.00 National Science Foundation grant to develop computer-assisted materials to supplement calculus and pre-calculus classroom instruction. $230,000.00 Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) grant to develop a comprehensive system for evaluation and improvement of college teaching. $100,000 Illinois grants to develop an on-line writing improvement service for students from sixth grade through college. $10,000 total in other funded projects.

Service: Member of fifteen professional organizations during career; held elective offices in two national and two regional professional organizations; led institutional, college, and departmental committees.

Previous Campus Consultations

Consulted to more than 50 institutions in the USA, Canada, and China. Made over 100 presentations; published over 60 items including four edited books, numerous chapters & articles, & book reviews; served as reviewer and/or editorial board member for several journals; produced monographs, handbooks, videotaped materials, theatrical productions, and public radio programs on teaching-learning topics; developed and distributed instruments and systems for evaluation of teaching and courses.
