With one experienced attorney, a highly capable legal assistant, and judicious employment of outside counsel in six specialty areas, Fernando Gomez has managed the legal needs of the twelve-campus, $1.3 billion Texas State University System for 20 years. A member of the system’s senior management team, he has advised and participated in diverse policy decisions impacting delivery of higher education services to 78,000 students including acquisition and building of new campuses, reconstruction of four campuses following two major hurricanes, creation of public-private partnerships to market technology, and management of a labor force of 14,000 people.
Gomez volunteers as legal counsel for the Texas International Education Consortium and the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce. He has authored three books, and consulted and lectured on higher education and legal topics throughout the United States and overseas, including Cuba and Yemen.
He is editing a book to be titled Centennial: A History of the Texas State University System. Scheduled for publication in summer 2011, the volume commemorates the service and contributions to the State of Texas of the system, its colleges, and its universities.
