8:45-noon Evaluating College Teaching
Virtually every college and university evaluates teaching. Some do it effectively, while others do not. This interactive session will focus on: 1) student ratings of instruction and 2) the teaching portfolio. It will examine important new lessons learned from research and from practical experience about what works, what doesn’t, key strategies, tough decisions, and links between evaluation and improved teaching performance. The objectives of this session are for chairs to learn: 1) how to help their institution develop more effective means of evaluating teaching; 2) how to better use existing evaluation data for improved performance and tenure or promotion decisions; and 3) what to do and what NOT to do in the process.
1:00-4:00 Managing Conflict and Especially Difficult
Personalities
The ability to effectively manage conflict and difficult people is essential to leadership success. Yet, the task of managing conflict can be uncomfortable for even seasoned academic leaders. In this session, chairs will learn about — and have an opportunity to practice — leadership communication strategies that enhance their comfort and proficiency for managing conflict and difficult people.

9:00-noon Leadership and Team Building
The first part of this session will address the "call to leadership" and allow department chairs to reflect on their motives, roles, and stresses as they journey down the road of academic administration. The second part will explore key elements of departmental team building. Chairs will develop strategies for effectively guiding a department through shared leadership, setting team goals, constructive conflict, consensus decision-making, building a supportive climate, and faculty development.
1:00-4:00 Navigating the White Waters of Departmental Change
Providing effective leadership for change is one of the chair's biggest challenges. Identifying what needs to change, articulating a compelling reason for change, and determining the process by which the change will happen requires careful consideration of individual, departmental, and institutional needs and norms. Success requires helping colleagues understand the need for change and its potential benefits as well as the application of change management theories. This session will explore change management theories, strategies for their successful application, and the unique role of the chair in bringing multiple perspectives into a common vision and action plan for change.
