The IDEA Pilot Program allows campuses to gain firsthand experience with the IDEA system to assess its fit with the campus culture and needs.

Implementing a new student ratings of instruction instrument is one of the most important processes undertaken at colleges and universities. In order to facilitate faculty and administrator trust, we recommend piloting the IDEA instrument prior to adopting its use. The following information will be helpful for planning the pilot details.

Getting Started with Student Ratings through the Pilot Program

Contact the Center to discuss pilot options. The following steps will get you started with paper and online options:

Paper Forms

  1. Identify an On-Campus Coordinator who will be the primary contact for The IDEA Center.
  2. Determine the number of classes and the number of students enrolled.

Using IDEA to Improve Teaching

The Diagnostic Form Report facilitates the initial inquiry into how learning can be improved. Teaching methods and styles are presented in five categories on pages 3 of the Diagnostic Form Report.

  • Stimulating Student Interest
  • Fostering Student Collaboration
  • Establishing Rapport
  • Encouraging Student Involvement
  • Structuring Classroom Experiences

POD - IDEA Center Notes provide guidance an employing each of the 20 teaching methods.
IDEA Papers and other resources are suggested for each of the five categories.
Best Practices related to using IDEA to improve teaching are offered from other institutions using IDEA.

Pilot Program FAQ

How many and what type of classes should we pilot?

Typically pilots include a representative sample of classes. We recommend that a minimum of 25 classes be surveyed. Consider including classes from a cross-section of disciplines and faculty rank, members of committees responsible for faculty evaluation, teaching improvement, or program assessment, and faculty senate members and other influential faculty leaders. Some campuses have asked faculty to volunteer and others ask each faculty member to survey at least one class.
